J C B 3cx year and serial number.

Post #1 by hubert » Tue Apr 19, 2022 9:54 pm

A friend of mine has bought a black cab 3cx. There is no plate on it to give a serial number. There is a number stamped on the side of the cab on the right hand side close to the rear wheel which reads 40126. It is powered by a non turbo Perkins engine. The number on the engine is LD50222192210P. The machine is four wheel drive and the front axle number is 448-07301. The cab doors are all glass with no frame with hinges & handles bolted to it. Has anyone got any idea of the year or able to give a serial number from the information given above? Thank you very much in advance.

The LD prefix to the engine number marks it as a: 4.236 engine (4cyl, 236 ci)

The frameless doors will narrow the alternatives, but I think JCB has several attempts at 'all glass' doors - some more successful than others.
Do the doors look like this?

I use one on a farm which fits this description and its UK 'D' registration suffix which places it around 1987

I believe the 'black cab' models with the all glass doors ran from 1985 ('B' reg in the UK) till around 1989 ('G' reg) with the 'grey cab' coming in for 1990. Grey cabs brought back the steel framed doors after operators got tired of exploding doors (been there myself)

My own 3CX is a black cab from '87 on a 'D', but it's 2wd with the N/A 4.236

Had a good look around my friends 3cx and found what i believe to be a serial number. 3CX /332419 /P8 . Could any one shed any light if this is correct & what year the machine might be. It is a black cab Perkins engine & 4WD. Thanking you in advance.

That sure looks convincing. Compare what you have to this manual and if you've got a match.
