what have i bought all working but dipper ram drops on its own and steering leaking in side cab below wheel, previous owner did headgasket on it but didn't torque nuts down no dials work but got it running and drove it 10 miles terrible knock from gearbox in 4th and5th but 3rd gear not to bad

Welcome, that's the model we have and will have the peculiarities, Looks a lot better than ours though, Our dipper ram has the same problem.

Hi, there's a good chance the steering is leaking from the orbital unit under the steering wheel, you should be able to get it re-sealed

i also noticed the front loader control leaking not sure if this is just o rings ?
couldnt not buy it £850 on the market place
will try n find plate to see what model tomorrow
drove back ok topped up water a couple of times , did an oil and filter change now seems to be pressure in rad
i did set tappets and tighten head down

They leak oil everywhere, there's more oil inside the cab of my 3c3 than in the tank! If there's pressure in the rad it could be head gasket or a cylinder liner dropped. Mine puts pressure in the rad and it's a liner, but for the amount i use it nowadays i just take it steady and keep topping it up, i'll get round to sorting it one day

Probably worth having the head off at some point. If not torqued down and used the gasket might have damaged. When the head is off you might fill up the water jacket in the block and see if that weeps into the sump. When we had aggro with one of ours we had the head skimmed and pressure checked. If you do have it apart, check the rad is not clogged inside or out.

Also, make sire it has a thermostat in it, they get removed to cool it down but it does the opposite on a 4/98 engine. The 'stat has a disc on the bottom that closes the bypass pipe off when it opens, if there's no 'stat fitted and the bypass pipe hsn't been blocked off (usually with a bit of broom handle it the pipe) the coolant will keep ciculating through the engine and not go through the radiator

so had the rockers off today and put a torque wrench on tightened down to 100 nm new thermostat as there wasn't one in it
will try again tomorrow hopefully fingers crossed

The leyland engine also needs the head re-torquing when it is hot, 100-110 lb-ft, 135-149 nm (assuming that it is a leyland engine!) run it up to temperature and then torque the head bolts again, a pain in the arse but it needs doing. And i really need to put my glasses on before typing on a small tablet, just noticed my spelling last time!!!
