Jcb 3cx identification

Post #1 by Bernie84 » Tue Nov 30, 2021 2:00 am

Hi all, after searching and searching for information on my newly acquired old Jcb 3cx, I’m very happy to find a like-minded group such as this.
I’m in the process of fixing from the ground up my machine and I wanted to start with identifying it. The serial number I found is 300440/p. If anyone can shine some light on when this machine was made and where if possible I can find the correct workshop Manuel, I will be eternally grateful.
Thanks so much in advance.

Can you put up some photos? There will be folk on here that will be able to ID.

Cheers essexpete, I finally figured out how to upload these images..:)
They aren’t by any stretch very detailed but I hope they can shed a little light.

Hi Bernie,You have what's known as a white cab model 3CX built from 1981-84. Then came the black cab and then the grey cab. I'd say yours is from 1983 as the serial number is just a little higher than my own which is from 82. The first of them had Leyland BMC engines but changed to Perkins in 82,hence the P on your serial number.
Yours looks to have been fitted with a longer dipper arm arm at some time probably from a black or grey cab which is no bad thing but maybe need to be more careful if slewing a full 3 foot bucket around to the side as you still have the narrower width jack legs. Sitemaster white cabs and standard black/grey cabs had them wider than the rear mudguards but standard white cabs had them nearly flush, hence they will tip over easier with the extra reach on the dipper.

I take it that the Shuttle is a big lever on the left of the dash?

That's right pete. Identical transmision to the Powertrain (although redesigned lever).

Thanks heaps for the friendly invitation, really makes for a welcome feeling.
I appreciate the massive write up agrimax, you certainly are an example of a knowledgeable 3cx person. I’m guessing you amongst others in this site have plenty of Jcb experience. Buying an older machine like mine almost felt daunting but knowing other fellows out there are enthusiastic for older equipment is great.
I think I start with an oil change then move on to giving all the hydraulics a reseal. After that I’ll put her to work and see what else needs doing first. Thanks again fellas.
