Handbrake caliper shims?

Post #1 by Afterburner » Mon May 24, 2021 2:56 pm

Hi All
Managed to eventually find the correct brake caliper for my 1989 3cx (I hope).
Tried mounting it last night but doesn’t quite centre on the drive shaft disc. Should there be shims or spacer between caliper and mounting bracket?
Can’t see anything in parts diagram.

Andy this may sound like a daft question but was the last caliper mounted that way? I can't help feeling that a mounting bracket may be bent out of alignment there?
I am sure Agrimax can answer your question.

There wasn’t a handbrake on the machine, its taken me months to get the right one from vicary.
Possibly the small mounting bracket is bent, maybe original caliper had a knock thats why it was removed.
The replacement caliper had slot/shim marks hence why I’m thinking there should be.

Two things I would do here; first turn the disc to ensure that it is not the disc which is bent, if that's okay it's a fair bet the mounting bracket is bent, be mindful that both of these items could be damaged particularly if the old caliper suffered a knock.

Jeremy, good tip I’ll try and turn disc when I get a chance. Assume it will turn free hand out of gear?

Yes it should turn with the machine out of gear just make sure the machine is safe before you crawl underneath it.

You'll need to lift the back wheels off the ground or it'll be very stiff to turn!

A useful tip from an old fitter for working under JCBs and giving some more headroom is to jack up on legs and wedge 2 short pieces of substantial timber between the jack foot and the lower crossrail.

Disc checked and looks straight. I think there defo needs to be shim there as the caliper has marks where a shim slotted in from the top.
Any one got pic’s to share of their 1989 3cx handrake?

Agrimax tends to be one of our resident JCB experts so perhaps he can offer you some advice on this? I have never had one of these apart before but would still question the caliper mounting, even with a shim unless the shim is angled how can it straighten things up? I guess we'll all find out when you solve this mystery, at least the disc is good so that's a positive start.
