Re: Mysterios metal in oil sump
It looks like the same bearing I mentioned earlier. Also would think that it is inside the gear. That's the gear housing you're looking at rather than the actual bearing itself. Would need the timing case off by the look of it. Other gears need to come off in front of it... I think.

Thanks agrimax, yes you mentioned an idler gear in an earlier post. I see what you mean about the bearing being inside the gear from the exploded diagram - so does that mean I will need access to a bearing press?

Re: Mysterios metal in oil sump
Almost certainly to fit the new one into the idler gear, you might be able to 'split' the old bearing shell by cutting it with a hacksaw, but getting the new one in really should be done in a press, rather than a vice...

Oh well at least the mystery is solved so good luck with the bearing replacement.

Hi,
I rebuilt quite a few of these engines many years ago and I'm surprised that the bearing has a bronze cage as that doesn't jog my memory.
You will clearly have to remove the timing case cover but replacing the bearing in the gear shouldn't be a problem. It will probably be too hard to cut with a saw but it should tap out OK.
Put the new bearing in the fridge to shrink and put the gear in boiling water or oil to expand, assemble them quickly and they should go together quite easily.

I usually use the oven to heat up the casings prior to dropping in new bearings . Half hour on gas mark 8 works a treat . Worked well for my last motorcycle resto . On little tip is wait until the wife is out before attempting this cheers Chris

Re: Mysterios metal in oil sump
Once you have the gear out, you'll have access to the back edge, so working your way around with a drift shouldn't be a problem to get it out.
If it's particularly difficult, once the inner race and balls are removed, a small amount of MIG/stick weld (1/4") in the ball track will shrink the race so it'll fall out under its own weight.
Keep the outer race as it will now be the perfect size for pressing the new bearing in.

Re: Mysterios metal in oil sump
Just to bump this up, I removed the injection pump from my 3c3 prior to pulling the engine at the weekend, and on that I noticed the injection pump shaft support bearing is caged. I see that we're talking about the same bearing, so this is confirmation that its a caged bearing there also.
