JCB 3CX 4WD differences

Post #1 by Slooby » Fri Mar 05, 2021 2:06 pm

César (qwaszx) and I have been chatting via WhatsApp about his 1988 3CX 4wd Grey Cab while he has been getting it to a working state.

At some point the front prop had been removed and I was pondering why...

I had assumed that the 4wd system would be the same as that used on the Black Cab with the front propshaft running from the drive on left side of the rear axle as shown in the brochure:

But no, there is a transfer box on the right side of the 4 speed gear box with a much shorter prop going to the front axle:

This makes me ponder whether there it's something that could be retrofitted (gearbox being a hell of a lot easier to swap out than a rear axle)...

It does seem curious that there were two different 4wd systems used in such a relatively short period of time.

I can't remember Slooby but does your machine have the Borg Warner shuttle?
I think the difference is the later machine has a transmission from ITL, which is/was a subsidiary of JCB. It was a completely different set up.

Ah, fairly sure mine has the Borg-Warner shuttle as it's an '87. In terms of the drive controls in the cab the Black and Grey cabs look identical from that perspective. I'm surprised that one type was on the market for approximately 2 years before they went in for a complete re-design
