JCB 3C2 3C3 parts interchange

Post #1 by MrF » Tue Nov 24, 2020 8:42 pm

Hi all,
Does anyone know what parts interchange between the 3C2 and 3C3? I think the 3C2 is a 1970 with a 38DT engine.
I'm interested because I have a 3C3, and have bought a 3C2 that has been in a roll over accident (really badly damaged cab and back acter is removed etc, the operator was lucky to get out alive tbh) and is probably most suited for spares use. We just went over it and got it to fire up from a external tank, and it sounds really sweet and didn't pressurise the rad etc.

1) will the 38DT bolt up complete to my shuttle torque converter in place of my 4/98 (4/98 has issues that I want to fix without rushing in the workshop proper and the 38DT is sweet sounding)?
2) are the front loader arm's the same? (I have some bush pivot damage and these are good)
3) are the hydraulic rams interchangeable?
4) front loader axle the same?

The plan is to strip the usable parts from the wrecked 3C2 and use them to make my 3C3 better where possible then part off the rest to try help keep another 3c2 in working state.

I swapped ong reach loader arms from a mk11 to a power train years ago. 1970 to 1980 and I think most rams were the same. The front axle was different. I reckon the older engine will likely be a few hp less? Not a problem off road.

Thanks Pete, your right, the 38TD in the mk2 is spec'd at having 65hp and a little bit less torque, and the 4/98 72hp, given my current engine is so tired, I might even get a increase in power because the 38DT is in better condition but really what I want is no overheating. I'm hoping the engine is a straight mechanical bolt in, and make a few linkages up to suit so I can revert later if I get the 4/98 how I want it.

The rams are great news because a few of the mk3's ones have chips and dents in their hard chrome rods from the part of its life it spent on demolition work.

Ive realized I posted this into the excavators section like a idiot, so I've asked a mod if they can wave their magic wand and fix my idiocy and move it into the backhoe section. Sorry about that, its not like I'm new to the breed...

Hi
Is the 3C3 a shuttle type transmission with a prop shaft drive to the rear axle , if it is you will have to swop the sump as the engine mounts are on the front of the sump on the 3C3 .

My 3c3 has the earlier 3c brockhouse fluid shuttle that bolts straight to the original tractor rear end, not the later powertrain system with the short pto as you describe and the engine mounts are not on the sump on mine, but i'll pop the sump off the 38DT anyway while its out when I pull the engine just to make sure the pickup is clean etc. The 3c2 is a manual box with a (broken release) clutch.
