JCB oil change

Post #1 by Matchless?58 » Mon Sep 07, 2020 8:57 pm

Hi all I'm planning to change the engine oil and filter . Leyland 4/98 engine .
I have two questions .
Will 10/40 diesel engine oil be ok ? Or what can anyone recommend .
I want to use diesel engine oil flush to give the engine a good clean prior to the change . What are opinions on this i.e some people say it can affect old oil seals etc .
Is it worth it if I don't go the whole hog and drop the sump and clean it ?
Whoops that's 3 questions so I better shut up now .
All advice /opinions gratefully received .
Cheers Chris

Not sure what you mean? You would use oil designed for diesels.

I've heard horror stories related to 'engine oil flush', (never sure you are getting the whole story).
I've decided not to use them, but rather change the engine oil at much shorter intervals than recommended (on low use machines at least).

10W-30 or 10W40 is fine in the UK.

Thanks for the replies and info .
I did think that I would use 10/40 but it's reassuring to get it confirmed .
Do you think it would be best to use a mineral oil on an engine that old or will it cope with a semi synthetic oil ?
I don't think I will use an engine flush as it will just create a niggling worry that it's damaging seals etc . I too have heard the horrible stories of things that can go wrong and it's going to be too much of a worry even if the stories are mostly unproven .
I guess it's a case of stick with what you know .
It will be interesting to do my first oil change on this machine see what state it's in ! Don't think it's going to be good .
Cheers Chris

You just need a 10W40 that exceeds the old API CG rating, so anything that is 10W40 and rated for use in a Turbo Diesel, if you look at my thread in this section What are the JCB 3CX Varients and a basic Operators guide? you'll see that I have tried to list all the oils and lubricants used in a 80's 3CX and a source for them.

I would second that I used the diesel oil for my JCB and works just fine!

Hi Chris,

What engine oil did you decide to use in the end? I've just been to my local agricultural supplier and got 20 litres of 15W40 semi synthetic which he says everyone uses now but I just wanted to confirm that its fine before I dump the engine oil and refill it.

Oh the joys of having a new toy but little knowledge :dizzy:

Cheers, David

Hi David
I must confess that I have not done the oil change yet . It's been too wet here to be messing around with JCB s .
I will be using 10/40 diesel engine oil .
I don't think it has to be a mineral engine oil but mustn't be fully synthetic .
Your 15/40 semi synthetic oil should be fine .
These old JCB s get neglected so much that any clean oil will probably be a revelation to it anyway !
Don't forget to renew the oil filter otherwise it's a bit of a waste of time changing the oil .
There is a list of part numbers under the JCB section of this site oil filter part no is listed there .
There are endless opinions on oil types etc but I guess clean oil of a near enough grade, changed regularly is better than filthy oil .
Hope this helps
Regards Chris

I'm of the camp that, particularly for low use machines, I'd prefer to pay half as much for oil and change it twice as often.
I'm not suggesting you use anything less than the recommended grade, just don't go silly hoping a modern oil will rebuild your engine for you.

Thanks for that guys  I thought what Id bought would be fine but being an newbie JCB owner, I just wanted to be sure and compared to whats there, a load of fresh oil and new filters all round should help it breath and run a whole let better. Fingers crossed
