3CX Leyland Engine removal. See pics

Post #1 by darklegend » Sat Feb 29, 2020 7:39 pm

I'm removing a seized Leyland from my 1981 White Cab 3CX.

So far I have front engine mount unbolted from chassis radiators out, pump shaft disconnected and all the little bits, cabling etc. disconnected.

Once I have removed the hydraulic lines for the power steering pump is it just a matter of removing the bell housing bolts and sliding the engine forward and out? What's going on in the bellhousing? Is it a torque converter? Splined shaft? I've only ever removed car engines from manual transmissions in the past so this is new territory for me!

I've got a 13 tonner to use as a sky hook so lifting it free should be OK. Just getting it loose is the issue.

Is it maybe easier to take the lot, box and all?

Any tips gratefully received!!

What about the hydraulic filter? I haven't got a spanner big enough for the unions currently so have left it so far..

Is it like our old Powertrain with the rear of the engine held by the iso mounts on the shuttle box?

Be careful reinstalling that you don't damage the torque converter coupling or clump the converter. I seem to remember the re-connecting was the fiddliest part done from either direction (engine out forwards and up or shuttle/gearbox out backwards and down).

Small suggestion:
I needed to get the block out of an old landcruiser for a mate. It had a three mount setup (two on the block, one on the box).
The box didn't need to come out, so normally you'd prop it. Rather than doing this, I welded some RHS into a top-hat (inverted) that sat on the chassis rails and cradled the box. This felt a lot more secure than a wobbly prop and didn't get in the way while removing/reinstalling the block.
