Help with 1983 JCB 3c 1400

Post #1 by Stephen.davis@velux.com » Wed Aug 14, 2019 5:36 pm

Hello all. New to the forums - 1st post. I am a new owner of 1983 JCB 3C1400 Loader Backhoe (machine number 3000966) and am struggling to locate reference materials for service and parts identification on my specific model. So far, this site has offered more assistance than most as I've been using your 214-3CX-1400b sevice manual (specific to 337001 onwards) and 2b-3-3c-3d-4d-mk2 service manual (specific to earlier '68-'75 machines) for many tasks; however, a few systems and the electrical wiring on my machine differ from these two manuals. As examples, any diagram or info on my cable-actuated mechanical shuttle shift (e.g., no solenoid) and electrical schematics specific to my machine are lacking.

I've been searching the internet for a few weeks and have already thrown away several purchases on incorrect manuals from e-bay and other similar sites (mostly because I struggled to properly identify my machine) - but to date, I have been unable to determine if documentation exists for my specific series of machine. My complete JCB Machine Serial Number is 14/3000966/P/7. I have the non-turbo Perkins 4.236 engine, LD build which correlates with the 1983 model. The 1983 3C 1400 description in my title came from a call to a local JCB distributor. Another member, roblee3rd also recently identified his similar serial number machine as a 3c 1400 2wd (June 14, 2019 post).

Can anyone clarify is documentation specific to my machine exists and if so, offer direction on where it might be found? Best of all worlds, Service Manual with correct Electrical Schematic, Illustrated Parts Breakdown and Operators/Owners manuals are all desired; however, most pressing at the moment is the proper electrical schematic. It will save me hours of opening wire looms to trace individual wires as necessary to put things back in order from the prior owner's butchery and melted masses of shorted circuits.

Thanks so much for any direction anyone can share.

Some of the regulars on here will confirm but I think you might have a machine similar to the UK 3CX with a white cab. Does it have manually controlled shuttle with a big lever?

Thanks for the responses! Mine has the large shifter lever mounted to the left of the steering column. Here, it terminates to a cable which runs through the floorboard, parallel to the clutch cable, down to the mechanical three position shuttle. Hard to get a picture as the clutch cable assembly sits beside and in front of the shuttle shift cable.

Take a look again at the download section. Go to page 2 of the JCB section and the last one at the bottom of the page should cover your machine.I think there is a wiring diagram relating to your serial number...... Your machine will be more or less equivalent to our first range of 3CX white cab machines here in the UK as essexpete has said although presumably yours will have a centre mount backhoe unlike ours with sideshift.(Centre mount is mostly unheard of here!)
Don't mistake the left hand floor pedal as an actual clutch either. It activates a dump valve and is really only to cut the drive momentarily for changing gear. If you use it like a clutch for inching or give it abuse, the clutch packs in the transmission won't like it.......

Well... I feel quite a bit ashamed and bewildered at how I could have overlooked that. It was clearly marked with the appropriate serial number scheme described. I’ve been scouring the downloads here for a couple days. No idea how I missed it. Regardless, thanks much Agrimax. In this case, the obvious was overlooked, so I do sincerely appreciate your response.

Ps - understood on the clutch that’s not exactly a clutch. Full stop before shifting - clutch only to unload/dump and shift shuttle - release and throttle up. Clutch was the best analogy I had.

. Might be obvious but don't push too high a gear with the transmission as that tends to overheat and damage.
