That looks pretty tidy, a really usefull little machine, A friend of mine had a 50 and the instant reverse packed up on it and i remember the machine had to be split in two, i am not sure if the same would ben be for the MF40. I am not sure but would there be enough room inside the cab to whip the seat out and get to the gearbox from in the cab, i have the Mf40 hand book which does not give to much detailed info on major mainenance, But the MF40 Parts book shows pretty good exploded diagrams of the gearbox. I could scan and post a copy tomorrow eve if that helps.

thanks topkit i actaully managed to get a copy of the manual online thankyou (well bought a copy of it) the exploded diagrams are useful but yeah nothing detailed in terms of how you might attack the job. looking at it yesterday the biggest pain is there is a main support frame sitting under the transmission so doesnt look like you could even split it & try to wiggle it out the bottom. I think as mentioend in earlier posts the whole front woudl need to come off.

I think i'll see if the guy will pop over in the next week or so & take a look & then as hairbear pointed out there may be a bunch of strip down prep I can do in advance.

it is a useful bit of kit especially to avoid all the heavy lifting when working on your own. the backhow is strong as an ox have ripped a few trees out with it & it didnt even blink.

I seem to recall that the top half of the cab could come off, and with the engine out it wouldn't take much to remove the dash and lift it out through the gap although if you are going that far it might pay to take the whole engine and gearbox out through the front in one piece then split it?
We've done clutches in Greys, 35 and 135 many times but the first time we had a 40 done a dealer mechy came out and working on a concrete floor had it done on his own in a day. So having watched very carefully how it was done we made a track for our trolley jack and we did the next one ourselves. Unfortunately the extra engineering that encases the 40 does make getting to some bits a right 'porkers backside' but it's not impossible. Just remember to jam some hardwood chocks in the front axle pivot as the engine doesn't balance too well on the front pin and a trolley jack. Not that that ever happened of course...

UPDATE:

I did post this the other day & it must have failed to post. Basically spoke to Agri Engineer who said the clutches often seize - i did some research online & yeah seems very common in old massey's. The solution was to use the rear legs from backactor, jack up the rear wheels, crunch it into L1 so the wheels were turning, put your foot on the clutch & stomp on the brakes a few times, it then popped free & job's a goodun - still playing with pedal adjustment which is a right ballache on your own but it's pretty good now.

One thing i did read online is some models had a piece of wood (old old ones) to chock the clutch pedal down for storage (thus moving the clutch & flywheel apart so they dont rust), others had a clip. I seem to have some kind of clip/bracket by the pedal which looks like it might be fore this purpose although I have yet to work out how the hell it can hold the clutch down. Anyway useful learning & saved a monster job ripping it all apart!

Pete; thanks for the update and very useful information  glad you got it sorted easier than a massive strip down.

I used to wedge the clutch on an old Thwaites dumper that only had occasional use. I did wonder if loading the clutch springs would weaken it over time?

I noted that on the posts I saw, however as some people pointed out some slightly weaker springs vs the clutch fully rusted on was a small payoff :)

Good to hear it's all sorted. As far as chocking the pedal down - I think the best way of stopping this happening again is keep using it!!!

Here's one for you...
I seem to remember that part of the tool kit supplied with a 40 was a large one-ended ratchet ring spanner. Anyone remember what it was for?

Clamps on the rear for sliding over the king post?
