3c2 Hyd.oil level and ram rod?

Post #1 by SiH » Thu Sep 14, 2017 2:50 pm

Afternoon all!
After losing a s@@t load of hydraulic oil when the big pipe between the rear valve block and loader valve block burst, I've put in a good 20 litres of new oil so far after fitting a new pipe. Thing is, the sight gauge/level in the cab is virtually impossible to see any level through, so was wondering if I just keep filling it with oil through the big pipe in the filter housing will it eventually level off at the bottom of the filler hose/top of the filter housing? Or would I be making problems or a bomb for myself!?! is there another way of telling if the system is full apart from the sight tube?
Secondly, the dipper ram on my machine has a good chunk out of the chrome rod, from previous life abuse. Is there a decent way of restoring the metal/chrome to stop the oil wizzing out when this part of the ram is used? Or is another ram the only way?
Cheers all!

Why not just replace the sight gauge with a new piece of nylon pipe?
You would be better replacing the rod as the seals will be destroyed. You can replace it with a polished steel rod, rather than chrome, which should be a cheaper fix and works every bit as well.

Does the dipper ram leak very much?

Cant believe I didnt think of getting a new bit of hose! I'll have to do somthing- already tried smoothing out the scar weeks back and filling with quick steel stuff, but leaks worse now than before! So news seals at least eh. ( can anyone remind me of thegood place to buy seal kits?- I'll have to look at old posts.) Saw where folks have made up the holes with solder, and weld, and grinded it back, so might give that a go.
Its difficult to get parts out here in rural France- one time when I wish I was back in the UK- nah!
It leaks about a teaspoon each time the ram moves in and out- so a fair bit.
Cheers boys.

Ram rods are very cheap to get made
I wouldnt even muck around trying to fix it, I would just get a new rod made and then I know its good
The truth is oil costs so much it doesnt take long to pay for the repair with the oil saved

Thanks boys for the input. There were a few raised edges which I whipped off. Might give some belzona liquid metal stuff a go, sounds like its good stuff, and worth a try before getting another ram eh. I’ll let you know how it goes.
