1993 3cx brakes any ideas help !
Just been to look at a 1993 L reg 3cx project 8 (i think) checked everything that i could think of on it one bit of play in the steering ram eye which a bush would sort out, but the brakes were not particularly good the transmission was very strong and would still drive the machine on tickover when i was trying to brake the pedal was going a long way down anyone know what this could be. Thanks

Hi David if a brake pedal travels a long way down its usually due to either badly adjusted brakes or very badly worn brakes; do the brakes work okay? If yes I'd take a guess they need adjusting.

Hi Jeremy there was some kind of brake pedal but it had a good stong transmission so in forward drive you needed a lot of pressure on the brake pedal which did not do alot until the pedal was near the floor, i have heard that the a back axle oil change can make a lot of difference, i am going to have a chat with a JCB fitter that i know and see what sort of a job it will be to give the brakes an overhaul.

I think the axle needs split to do the brake discs etc .
That's obviously a fair bit of work .
My own brakes weren't the best and I replaced them , but the biggest difference seemed to come with bleeding them . This was the older style axle so I can't really shed much light on the newer style axle brakes .
Is the transmission usually that tight that the machine wants to drive away at idle ?

Had a JCB fitter confirm that its a good days work to replace the brakes, rear wheels off and back axle out, i havent decided whether to buy the machine or not yet, There are a few others about so may do a bit more travelling yet! Its half the fun in hunting out a new project so i don't mind.

Well i took the plunge a purchased the 3CX so i have already started doing bits and pieces a decent pressure clean including inside the cab! Engine oil flush and change, i drained the kingpost which was a sludge mixture of oil and water, greased everything up, Then went on to the brakes, there is a little adjustment on the pedal slave cylinders then i bled the old fluid out and added fresh new 15 grade mineral, i got air out of the system a few times and now i have brakes again,

I though i better share a few pics of my latest backhoe loader, last owner had it for 15 years, I have just started a major service along with tidying up the paintwork which i finished yesterday.

Nice one David it looks a very tidy machine and I would never have thought that it was that old.
