Just a quick question, I have a BMC 3 cylinder diesel engine fitted in a JCB. It runs pretty much perfect other than a chuffing from a ill seated exhaust valve on number one cylinder. Is this a common issue or problem? What's likely required to repair? I'm hoping it's just a matter of lapping it in again. I'm presuming that its water down the exhaust that's corroded it. A days hard work hasn't cured it. It runs without missing just chuffing mainly at idle and no smoke. So can't be completely shot on that valve. Ideas or comments appreciated.

Sadly no, it's definitely the exhaust valve on cylinder 1. I have removed the springs and checked for free play etc but not removed the head. I might see if I can do a hooky regrinding on it in situ with a hand drill and the manifold off.

Best lift the head off. Half an hour with an impact gun.Maybe need the seats recut and lap all the vsalves when in there. BTW,did you check the valve clearances first? Maybe a tight rocker arm.......? Or it could also be a blown head gasket. Can give the same sound if blown in the right place.

Sound advice it does not pay to try and cut corners.
