JCB 3D II Hydraulic issues

Post #1 by EwanW » Sat Nov 19, 2016 3:41 pm

Can anyone help? Just bought a 1971/2 JCB 3DII, working well although showing her age. I am having a major issue with a hydraulic leak. There is oil leaking out from a "valve" underneath the left front lift arm pivot, just ahead of the windscreen. Can anyone tell me what the two valve looking bits are? The one under the lift arm is leaking, the other seems not to be.

That is as far as I can remember the breather for the hydraulic oil reservoir which is basically the frame of the digger .It may be overfilled with oil ,the sight glass is to the right of the brake pedals in the cab. Liam.

Thanks Liam, I have just put oil in it as I couldn't see any in the tube, but the tube is very discoloured. Will get in there with a strong torch tomorrow and see if I can spot the level.

Hi Ewan,
Remember to close all the rams before checking the oil level. If you don't surplus oil will be displaced from the rams back to the reservoir when the rams are closed.
This will cause the level in the reservoir to rise and possibly overflow, particularly if you can't see the level in the gauge and may have over-filled it anyway.

In front of your windscreen you have three breathers. The one in the left- middle is for your fuel tank. The two outer breather are for hydraulic oil. Does this leaking of oil happen after you've filled it up with oil? This happened to me one time after over filling with a breather that was clogged up with dirt on the hydraulic filter side.

Yes, had filled it as I couldn't see through the tube, the breather on the left (fuel tank side) under the lift arm was pretty packed with dirt so I scraped it out, which was when it started to leak.

Cracking looking 3DMKII there, parallel arm's to :)
When checking the hydro oil level, if you can see the sight glass, it should be 2 3rd's full. With the machine in the travelling position. I.E as if you were about to drive off

I'm fine thanks Mark and have a project machine of my own if you look at the second page of the excavators topic.
