Unfortunately this 3Dmk1 isn't original. Its original boom has been replaced by a mk2 boom. I would imagine the dipper doesn't tuck in too well now either.

Here is a close up picture showing the very odd/crude adapter to mate the 3Dmk2 dipper to the 3Dmk1 boom. Why not just stick with the mk1 dipper?

Great find William, :claphands: .. i am thinking that the boom could be an experimental boom, sort of a transition boom, reason why i say this is because the boom looks stumpy, and the plating does not cover the dipper ram, if you know what i mean.

Martyn you are right. From comparing the boom on Franks machine to the boom on a more typical 3Dmk1 the length would be the same. On both booms when you compare the locations of the upper boom ram pin and the lower dipper ram pin they seem to be identical in location.

The variations in these 1967 diggers is incredible.

Frank, apologies, your digger is as original.

This is a picture of one that I once owned.

Back in the mid seventies i was working for a groundwork contractor on a near by housing estate, i had two machines to play with, one was a MF 244, with no backhoe, the other was a H reg 3Dmk2, it had the large extended wheel housing of a mk1, mk2 cab, with rectangle working lights, but it had the boom and dipper of a mk2 3D, loading arms were standard arms.. only problem with machine was the loading arms were slightly twisted, if you put machine on flat ground with front bucket on floor the bucket would be 6ins higher on the right hand side, oh and it was painted blue :dizzy: great digging machine though

Very very rare 1968 JCB 3D on Ebay. Only made like this in 1968. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JCB-3C2-Rear- ... SwjMJXCpb-

Here is what some looked like in 1969. Is this like the one you had a go on Martyn?

The side step was not as long as the one in your photo William, more like the one in the ebay photo.
