So, I swapped the pipes, and to my surprise the problem turned out to be with the ram, not the control valve. This is a bit of relief, as the ram can probably be rebuilt, or, if unrepairable, replaced, at lower cost and trouble that the valve chest/block.
And in further good news, the machine has decided to move under it's own power again! This further reinforces my belief that the transmission problem is a sticking valve. I will probably have to split the machine anyway to clean out the valves, but hopefully I won't have to replace any major components.

Perhaps worth changing the oil again. Not sure what oil is spec but ordinary ATF is quite effective at cleaning and lubricating. I wonder if running some through on light loads might do some good? Anybody else?
