JCB 3C 3 warning light issue - pics inside!

Post #1 by ehannon » Wed May 27, 2015 10:45 pm

Hi Guys,

Im now the proud owner of a build 5 3C mark 3!
Tatty but good power.

I noticed a couple of flashes of the following warning light the other day and im wondering could you guys help me out on what it means and the possible reasons for it flashing?

I have the 3c manual downloaded but it only covers the older type dash.

Any help much appreciated.

Looks like a low pressure warning light. I assume you have checked the fluid level in the shuttle /torque con? Does the light normally come on when you switch on then go out when running? It might come on when you shut down the revs from high to idle when the transmission is hot. It might also flash on when you shuttle. It should not really be on at all when running an could be a sign of a weak pump or leaking clutch packs. Before you worry too much I would change the transmission oil (or at least as much as you can), change the filter and possibly pull off the sump to check the strainer. I suppose the pressure switch ought to be checked out as well.
Another thought is the rad clean? The trans oil cooler is ahead of the main rad and restriction may cause overheating which could drop pressures although I would guess you might get the engine hot first. I think there may also be a transmission temp warning light as well.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Yes it flashes when I change direction. The transmission oil is at the correct level and this oil has a pink colour to it. Does this colour sound right?!?!

Thanks

I think that era of transmission should have a SAE 10W type fluid rather than the AFT type.

Are you checking the oil during fast idle or immediately on stopping? It will not give the correct reading from cold in the morning. Sorry if that is stating the obvious.

Ok so there are two problems here.

1. Im not reading it at the right time. It gives a good oil level first thing in the morning. So i need to check this again after working the machine.

2. I have the wrong fluid in there???? Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks in advance for all the replies. - Much appreciated!

ok so after a bit of searching i have found that this problem has cropped up before here.

jcb 3c3 powertrain

it seems that yes - it is not ATF fluid that should be put in there.

I have red coloured oil in mine so im assuming it is ATF

Does anyone here have experience of changing the oil in these?. Where is the sump bolt/ IS there a sump bolt?

Thanks in advance for the replies...

it looks like 10W oil is to be used in the borg warner and NOT ATF
