Machine identification and manual

Hi all,

having purchased an old 3CX I'm looking to keep it going and give it some attention.
I believe it is the first JCB 3CX 1981 (it is an X reg) - perkins engine, diagonal controls.

I'm after the operator's handbook, part number 9801/4000 and I can't find that in the manuals downloads section so if anyone has a copy that would be a bonus.

Am i right in thinking standard 15W40 is fine for the engine?
HP46 hydraulic oil? - how much would I need for a full change?
What grease to use?

This site is a fantastic source of information so thanks to all those who keep it going.

Cheers
John

The engine should be a Leyland 4/98

Hi John,As William has said, the engine should be a Leyland 4/98NT.Also as marked on the chassis plate and having the exhaust leaving the bonnet on the right hand side.(Perkins on the left). 15w/40 will be fine for the engine and 32 might be preferable for the hydraulics although 46 will do no harm.Think for a complete hyd oil change, you're looking at 120 litres or thereabouts, although you'll never get all the old stuff out of the rams and hoses.Any lithium based grease will do.
Very straight looking machine you have there and even the fog light is still intact!

thanks for that - yes the exhaust is on the right.
I was under the impression that only the perkins engine had the forward/backward lever to the left of the steering wheel (which I have) or maybe it is the same with the leyland engine.
ANyway - thanks for the info on the oils/etc. Hopefully I can get round to giving it some tlc soon!

Hi
I've got an old 3C2, I'm looking for a layout of the controls so I can make up some legends for both the front loader and the Backhoe controls.
Can anyone help....
NB I'm not at home at the moment so don't have access to the machine... And my memory isn't that great!
