JCB 3C MkIII Rear Wheel covered in oil...

Post #1 by Woody3 » Sat Apr 19, 2014 4:34 pm

Just been under the rear of the machine and it appears my right handside rear wheel is covered in oil. I can see it actually dripping from the axle as such.

Any ideas what could be causing this and is it something that is "easy" to fix?

sounds like the oil seal is leaking in the end of the halfshaft which transmission / axle set up have you got, is it the Leyland or JCB's own rear axle?...

Have you got a separate prop shaft?

I'll have a look tomorrow morning. Don't recall a rear propshaft, but not certain.

Woody's digger has the Brockhouse Build 3 torque so would be the Leyland axle.

Mines is about the same (keep putting it off), not a big job to do if it was the Leyland tractor but more of a job on a JCB

Ah, so I'm still ok to use it? Didn't want to drain the axle dry.

Is it the hub seal that's gone then? I'm leaning towards getting someone in to fix it, as I don't like the idea of 7tonne of steel without a wheel on it, above my head...

Remove floor plates. Jack machine up. Remove wheel. Drain oil out of rear axle. Remove heavy plate at rear of axle. Might need assistance with this. Inside you will find a large nut held on with a split pin. Remove pin & nut. Half shaft should pull out. Prize seals out of axle housing. Replace seals and fit half shaft taking end float out of half shaft. Do not over tighten.
