Correct Rear Rims & Tyres - 82 3CX White Cab

Post #1 by MetalHog » Wed Feb 12, 2014 1:39 pm

Hi Folks,

I need the help of the experts.

I'm going to get a set of rear tyres for my 82 3CX. The current tyres are the same ones I bought it with. I'm confused however as to the correct rim and tyre size. As you can see in the photos, the right hand side has a 16 9/14 28 tyre, with a 28 rim that looks like it's from an earlier 3C.(Crossing in centre) On the left we have a 18 4 26 with a 26 rim. Both are eight stud.

Chap I bought it from told me he bought it like it is. If someone could please advise me which one is correct I can pick up a match at the breakers, I'm guessing it's the 26, but i read a post about the earlier 3CX's having the 3C rear wheels ?

I've googled plenty of pictures, a lot show 3CX's on both types of rim ? Although some are red, this 28 rim is yellow ?

Baffled !

The wheel rims on a white cab 3CX were red originally but look better yellow on a 3CX methinks. A 3CX wheel rim never had the cross strengtheners around the stud holes. Not sure about the size of rim but if your 3CX has extradig then the 18.4 by 26's are better.

Thanks for that. It's not extra dig, but I think I'll go with the 18 4 26.

Cheers !

Ps: I plan to remove the wheels myself and take away to be fitted. Never done anything that size before. Is it straightforward enough or will I get a mobile fitter out. .?

You'll need an inch drive socket set. But if you have it its a gift. Easier than a car thanks to the jack legs.

I think Paddy means fitting the tyres ...

It's all ... depends. rims and tyre weight all play a factor as well as how stiff the tyre is, and what you've got around to help you to the job.

I prefer to fit them while the rim is on and there is no set procedure I could describe. I also (and a lot of older tyre fitters from a generation back would faint) use a couple of varieties of vegetable oil (castor is preferable) to keep the rubber lubed so the inner bead doesn't tear and saves excessive air pressure to pop the tyre into place.

The very early ones did have the cross strengtheners across the stud holes like the 3C's. I stand corrected!

Sorry to contradict William, but am not convinced. I know the rims were red, possibly through to the Perkins engined sitemaster, although I think the last of them before the black cab,had yellow rims.Did the strengthened centres not stop with the first Powertrains? A near neighbour of yours(just by the old clock) with a rough PT once told me that.Maybe not right though.
Am near sure the white cabs all had 28'' tyres too. Mine has,as has my da's.

I've seen so many of the late powertrains without the strengthened steel centres that I thought too that they had been discontinued but in this youtube footage at 4.58 mins there are brand new 3CX dancing diggers with them fitted. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVaTxPNJiTs&list=PL98EFB3CF73A2C766

I'am pretty sure there's one the same as the 18.4.26 on eBay at the moment
