Our old JCB, now deceased - What was it?

Post #1 by darklegend » Wed Jan 22, 2014 10:37 pm

This was my old man's JCB, taken by the scrap man a couple of years back. Can anyone identify it. I thought it was a 3C but looking at the pics again it looks a bit different from the 3C's i've seen in pics.

It was apparently built on a Fordson Major chassis but this may not be the case?

Early 3 's and 3C's were built on Fordson Majors until they stopped making them in 1964 , Mr Bamford was VERY unhappy about this and switched to Nuffield / Leyland skid units until the 1980's
Not all those who wander are lost.

I did not look at Martyns post straight away and I was thinking it odd that the slew ram housing was at the bottom and the dipper looks a bit skinny for a 3.

Yes, did a bit of digging last night and decided it was a 2B, they made them on a Fordson for less than a year before being forced to switch so it was probably reasonably rare. Nevermind, it's been turned into a washing machine in China now probably!

could it be a JCB 3 mk2?
I believe they did change the 3 in 1964 to have the side steps & side entry window. changed the front loader arms & cab shape. very similar to the 2B

I have came across a couple of these on my search for parts for me 1963 3 and they had the original identification plates inside the cab as a 1964 JCB 3.
