3CIII - changing hydraulic strainer

Post #1 by steve ball » Tue Mar 25, 2014 9:54 pm

I plan to change the strainer but before doing so would welcome advice.

When removing the drain plug before taking off the cover plate to access the strainer, does this drain the entire contents of the hydraulic tank?

Would be useful knowing how much oil I might expect to flow out before I start.

Yes it will drain the whole tank , can't remember how much oil it takes but it's a few gallons , you will need a big drain tub!....

I have drained the tank a couple of times and confirm it will drain the whole amount and will take approx between 4 and 5 drums (20 lites). Ive not changed the filter in the tank on my machine as the oil was spotlesslessly clean but be interested to see a pictures of what it looks like inside the tank if you can post a picture?

Thanks Tom, that makes good reading. I haven't changed my filter yet but it's on the 'to do' list.

I have never accessed the tank strainer either but I have changed a hydraulic filter. Is the strainer paper element or is it fine wire mesh like the steering pump strainer?

The main hydraulic strainer is fine wire mesh, accessed from the left hand side tank plate (from underneath).

As per the steering strainer,it needs petrol, compressed air and patience!!
