burst hydraulic pipe

This might be a fairly simple question, but I can't find the answer by searching the forums.

I was using my JCB 2D this morning and one of the pipes on the small ram on the front loader (on the side of the ram closest to the engine) burst and showered me with oil (it was very perished). Once I switched the machine off, I tried to lower the front bucket, but when I try lower it, it sprays oil everywhere.

How do I go about removing the pipe? Can I just take it out or will I lose lots of oil?

With a burst pipe on a loader. try and contain the oil spill if possible.If near a stream or river this is very important as you can get fined for pollution. I use an old washing up bowl to catch the oil, you should not loose the entire contents of the hydraulic tank Make sure all the pressure is released by wiggling the levers back and forth as their may be presure contained within another circuit. Remove the old pipe taking care,,sometimes with an old pipe, the wire reinforcing is exposed.Wear gloves .Take the pipe to an hydraulic hose specialist and ask them to make a hose to pattern of your burst hose.Refit and top up hydraulic tank,check functions and operate till relief valve blows to check pipe is ok .I would also check any other pipes on the machine that look perished and renew them as soon as you can.
All waste oil will need to be disposed of correctly.

The problem is though, the front bucket is still a meter or so in the air and if I try lower it, oil sprays out the burst pipe! I can probably try support the front end, but not sure if that is necessary?

Just a rough shot here but I would be tempted to tie some rag around the burst to stop the oil from spraying everywhere while I lowered the loader arm.

You will not loose much oil from that height,just looks a lot Just lower gently.A rag as Jeremy says will help reducing spray.
