New poster, looking for help with hydraulic pump

Post #1 by clogher71 » Sat Oct 24, 2009 10:11 pm

Hi All

My old JCB 3C11 sprays out hydraulic oil from the pump under severe
pressure, i.e. putting the front wheels on full lock. I have been told
the pump will give up eventually. I am wondering how to remove the
drive shaft from the pump and is it a job for a novice, can the pump be
refrubished with a gasket/seal kit, again can I do it myself, I have
fitted a seal kit in the power steering ram myself, can they still be got for the hydraulic pump? or
should I just source another pump, just would be concerned about how
good a pump would be, or does anyone have a pump that needs a good
home???
Any advice /help apricated.....

Michael

Hi Clogher 71, I am not a fitter ,but have you checked to see where the oil is comming from? It could be a leak in the main pressure hose or pipe comming out of the pump . or as simple as a loose fitting .. Or the pump housing could be cracked . Should be only one seal on the pump sealing the drive shaft . If its leaking there ,i would say a new seal is not going to fix it as something inside the pump is letting pressure get to where its not supposed to be .. Locate the leak first then someone who knows more should be able to help .Welcome to the forum by the way . ian.

Is it a power steering pump or main hydraulic pump ? As Ian says, clean off the area an check its not a pipe connection of hose before you start taking the pump off.Maybe the pump just needs a seal kit to repair it.A fairly easy job to do.Try you JCB dealer first, there are a lot of firms around that can make up a kit for you if you show them the pump. Most pumps have two end cap seals and a shaft seal. The shaft seal can go hard over time and even form a ridge on the shaft.Another fault can be hydraulic pressure settings. Some screw up the relief valve if the machine is getting worn, the pressure will find a weak spot.Connections on the hydraulic pipes/hoses or worn out seals.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replys. The pump is the main hydraulic one in the front, Its like two halves bolted together and the fluid sprays from the joint where the two are bolted together, if I could figure how to remove the drive shaft going into the back of the pump I would remove it from the machine. I am in Southern Ireland, but the old girl carrys an old English reg. MMB 442H, and to the best of my knowledge we have only one JCB dealer here (E.C.I. in Dublin). If someone had refurbished one of these pumps or have a workshop manual or even a parts manual that I could see the break down of the parts. The job is on the long finger for a while now, and i might get to it now the long nights are here......

Cheers

Michael.

Hi Martyn,

Thanks for those, not sure if one of them is my pump or not, but I will print off and take a look, it gives me an idea whats inside, hopefully its just an o ring like thats shown ,and its not the housing thats cracked..

P.S. I got a present of one of your models for Christmas last year, perhaps you remember shipping a 3C11 model to Ireland earlier this year.

Thank you

Michael.

Ok Martyn, then mine is in there so, a big ask, maybe, would you have the same type diagram of the drive shaft that goes into the back of that pump?
