Irish JCB 3C Mk2

Hi folks,
I said i would put up a thread to document the new us (brother and I) JCB 3C Mk2. Its a 1978 machine and we intend to tidy up. It will be a working machine on the farm.
I have posted on this site previously on a mambo thread as regards changing the hydraulic filter but I will try to document this machine here as I go.

So a few images to kick it off.

Next on the list was a service of the engine and the hydraulics. We also put a new steering ram in.
The brakes needed attention also. We disassembled, cleaned and put it back together. Result - we managed to get it to skid.. I call that a success, no more jacks as handbrakes or buckets as anchors!!!!!

Needed to retap the holder for the top plate. So satisfying the small things like that. (Managed to drop the tap in there- not fun fishing it out!!


Next on the lists was the non existent brakes.. pretty handy to do. So much easier than a Zetor.

2 questions for the JCB experts here. I am looking to put in a mechanical water temperature gauge in. The hole size is 14.4mm and all gauges I have so far found are 15mm. Has anyone done this here already? If so what gauges did you use?

Current set up. Looking to replace the sensor there with a mechanical one.


This is an image of the old engine we have.
2nd question- have a fair idea but wanted to confirm the tap on the above image is a bypass for the thermostat in warm weather to stop it overheating? Is that correct?

The tap is on what was the cab heater circuit. On gave hot water throught the heater matrix and off stopped the flow.

So, we have a heater box off the other engine.

Now, let’s see what we can do with this.

The second question I had above is for a mechanical water temperature gauge.
The diameter of the old sensor is 15.63mm and all the mechanical ones I’ve seen are 15mm.
Has anyone changed this out to mechanical before. I’m more comfortable with mechanical as the electrics except starting the engine and charging do not exist yet and may not exist for a while more.

AFAIK,the thread size of your sender is 5/8 unf. I'm nearly sure the mechanical type that is used on 100 series MF tractors has the same thread fitting on the end of the capilliary tube.Very easy to get off the interweb........but I don't know if the hole in your thermostat housing could be enlarged to take the bulbous end of the tube.Alternatively,go with a new electric sender and compatable gauge. Power from key switch to gauge and wire from other side of gauge to sender.

The top Ram on the back actor was dropping ‘liquid’ money everywhere so that needs to be addressed as soon as possible considering we changed out the filter and filled it up with fresh fluids.
This is the kit I got today to address that.
Fingers crossed it’s the right one.

Think you will find that tap would isolate the heater matrix in the cab?
