3Cmk11 alternative engines

Post #1 by Danngerous » Tue Feb 14, 2017 10:42 pm

Hi.

I've got an old and very tired old 3C mk11 with the 3.8 Nuffield 4/65 engine in it. I have a great engine builder in the UK who has a few spare cranks waiting for me when I get round to removing the engine but in the mean time I was thinking: Is there a more up to date Cummins engine that would fit.

Or even, gasp, shock, horror, has anyone ever tried fitting something like a Peugeot TU diesel engine. Just thinking a more modern fuel efficient diesel engine, would it be able to run the machine?

What do you people think?

Hi Ian, it would probably be feasible to fit another engine; however this would present far more issues than simply getting a good second hand engine or rebuilding the one in the machine. If your machine runs okay but just has a 'tired' engine then look for a good second hand one and rebuild that ready for transplant.
To fit a different engine you would need to consider; similar power output, physical size, making new engine mountings, output drive spline, bell-housing attachment, electrical wiring and fuel connections, plus a few other things I've probably forgotten.

You might have some problems with the speed at which the rated power and torque are produced.

You'd want another industrial rated engine at least so the fuel pump governor works correctly to keep engine revs at or around the hand throttle setting. Most modern small diesels whilst higher powered for their size are also very high revving in comparison to an old tractor engine.

Hi,
I have in the past completed several engine conversions.
First one was a Perkins P6 in a Humber Super Snipe car, the list also includes a Gardner 5LW in a Ruston 19 RB, Perkins P & R6 engines in petrol Bedford lorries, a Ford 4D in a Fordson N tractor and many more.
There is a lot of work and skill involved and I agree with everyone who says you should find yourself a replacement as original.
Good luck.
Fred

More fuel efficient? These old BMC/ Leyland engines run on very little diesel.
