The trouble with big loads can lead to big breaks, this 463 cracked through
the main tube, and with the weight wrenching it round and open,if we cant
get it welded back in place it means a new neck, but i know the man to ring
who has welded many a scraper back together
463H scrapers

Re: 463H scrapers
That's one serious crack you have there, Roly.
I'd be interested to see pics of the repair job if possible, before, during and after welding up.
I imagine that you'd need a special jig capable of exerting a lot of force to bring the two halves back together so that they can be welded, unless, of course you cut it right through.....what a mess!
In the second, third and fourth pics there is a small hole at the (top) end of the crack, presumably this was drilled to stop the crack going further ?

Nicky, yes unusual place to crack, but it seem to start underneath where a hole big
enough to put your hand through had been gassed to drive out a sheave pin
when it was cable operated, our mistake for not welding it back up.

John, the small hole you see goes with a row of them each side of the tube to
hold two rails for the block to slide each way with apron lift and ejecting a load,
i,ll update when it gets fixed

Re: 463H scrapers
Thanks,Roly, I can see the other 'holes' but with their bolts in when I look carefully at the first pic.
I believe that it's standard engineering practice to drill a (small) hole just beyond the end of a crack before welding up. This stops the crack spreading further.
The presence of that hole will have stopped the crack going further, and probably prevented catastrophic failure.

I smiled when I read this.....reminded me of the welding tech. lecturer at college who explained this theory and said it was the reason why women have belly-buttons & *******s
