Remember when they first came out, two CAT shovels were delivered to my site in Middlesbrough from Wimpey plant at Southall by two brand new Wimpey Transcontis , the drivers were overjoyed with them and could not believe how fast they were .
Not all those who wander are lost.

With a big cam Cummins super E290 they would be pretty rapid; that was the engine that the drivers at HFT always rated above the others fitted into the Sed Atki 400 and 401.

 Grand truck in its time, spent many hours on the continent in the early eighties in these whilst working as a Ford tractor demostrator running out of Chelmsford. We had five in our department for continental work, four with low loaders and one with crane and portable workshop/chuck wagon. They were high spec, and as i can remember all tweaked engine wise at Dagenham Motors. Can remember a few times taking on Scania V8 on the autobahns !! Alot of great memories !!!! Will try and find some photos. reg. ATW 952X sticks in my mind for some reason, all ran with sequential regs.

Cheers John

Thanks John
They still look remarkably modern compared with others around at that time.
Did they have a good reputation alround?

Can't see why not Pete they had a pretty bullet proof driveline that was standard on British built trucks of the same time period; Fuller gearbox, Rockwell rear axle (the best) and the big Cummins lump driving it all.
The only difference in many ways was the drivers cab which if memory serves me correctly was of Renault origin, well Berliet.

What struck me was it matched the colour scheme on the publicity material posted above, hence posting it.

Dident look at reg no. (i only tend to know a few northern ones) but could an Essex reg be ex Ford UK ?

There are several others about on the rally circuit, But not many. Still look a good motor today !!
