Road Planer Memories?

Post #1 by modelman093 » Sun Jan 18, 2009 12:12 pm

The great pic of the Limmer and Trinidad "tar boiler" in the last posting prompts me to ask does anyone have any recollections/pics of the road planing trains that were operated by by a company that I believe was called East Anglian Road Stone or something similar.
I have hazy memories of the device being pulled by one of the old Scammells with the "coffee pot" radiators.

'Up north' Glossops used to have ex-WD Scammell tank transporters pulling gigantic burners that heated up the tarmac that was then scraped off by a loading shovel . Used to fascinate me as a kid as they generated lots of heat and noise .
Hot planing as opposed to what they now call cold planing with an abrasive drum .
Not all those who wander are lost.

Here's a picture I recently acquired via E-Bay of a Tilbury Road Planing Train
