At a max of 2000 or so rpm I guess they were slow, but you could probably pull away in top.
If a LandRover doesn't leak oil, it's run out.

The Scammell 8x8s were developed for The Ministry of Transport as motorway gritters.

Yes they were 8x6 and in service.
Not many made though,
don't know exact numbers
Atkinson 6x6 much more numerous.

Were the Foden gritters 6x6? I had always assumed 6x4.
