i wish i had taken photographs of the letourneau crane that i seen in the john brown shipyard in glasgow. it was about 8 years ago , this machine reminds me of it. i remember there was a spare engine in a crate. it was the first letourneau i seen in the flesh!.

Hi Allistair,
I wish you had taken some too!
I worked for John Browns in the '80s and that LeTournea was worked by UIE who built oil rigs in the shipyard. If I remember they had two.
At that time there was a strict 'no cameras' policy - hence the reason I never took any pictures!
In the last few years the whole place has been completely cleared for redevelopment, with only the giant Goliath crane at the basin done up as a tourist attraction.
Regards,
Dave. S.

Re: An old Letourneau crane
Great photos Shaunrh...certainly a very rare bit of equipment and worthy of being restored.
Alistair......I did take photos of the LeT at the John Brown ship yard. They did not turn out very well since it was inside one of the buildings. We were in shifting some of the tonnes and tonnes of equipment which was auctioned off when the yard shut down. It was an amazing bit of kit and in very good condition. I reckon from memory Murray Pollock (journalist) has some decent pictures of the machine. Does anybody know where it went too ???

Re: An old Letourneau crane
dave s and tracshovel, i was there around time of auction as we bought 2 of the overhead cranes for our workshops. around the same time one of the shops was being prepared as a blockbuster film set!, i cannot remember what the film was. i looked for clips of the shipyard on youtube and there are some clips of the outside goliath cranes.
it would be nice to see some pictures of this machine and yard, a new thread perhaps?

Fianlly came across the pics of the crane at John Browns. Excuse the very poor quality...not sure how I managed to mess them up.
