leyland 272 syncro with hydraulic problem.

Hi, I've got a 272 and the back arms (and pickup hitch) have started to play up. The problem is that they will only go down a very small way, (hitch hook down about 2 inch) before stopping solidly. Knocking the hydraulic lever out of opperation does not make any difference nor does stopping the engine! The hydraulics also keep going back up even when the operating lever is still down. The linkages are all free so I'm thinking it must be a valve problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Jim

I think there is a dedicated Nuffield/Leyland forum. You might ask on here http://thefarmingforum.co.uk/index.php I think you can sign into that one fairly easily.

Wasn't there a locking lever somewhere to fix the arms/impliment in a raised position (mechanically so not relying on hydraulics) for road travel?

Hi Rob, Yep, it does have a mechanical lock and its pulled out and the arms do lower a small amount.

Thanks for your reply.

No problem, having re-read your original post it looks like a 'top off' job. Don't quote me though!

humm, I've had the top off and though I can see the valves, servicing them would not seem possible without taking the complete back end off?

I've a colleauge who currently has a syncro in bits. If I remember, I'll ask next time I see him. I've never been in the intimate gubbins of a Leyland, getting 'vetinary' with the control valve on a Fergie is bad enough.
