David Brown Crawlers

Post #1 by John Gaunt » Sun Dec 09, 2007 12:52 pm

Herewith some pics taken a few weeks ago at a crawler ploughing day in Norfolk. I was amazed to find almost the whole post war range of DB crawlers, including a 30TD like my own.
I was not previously aware that they made two versions of the 50TD, one with a 4 and one with a 5 roller frame, both represented here !

Watching old Brit movie 'Rockets Galore' on the excellent 'Talking Pictures' freeview channel (which is full of mainly old Brit films and TV.)
Anyway off the ferry comes this lovely David Brown 50TD ( maybe an early example of Product Placement :) -

Hi,
I bought a 50 ITD as in the above post in 1960. Used it mainly for agricultural work grubbing out hedges, reclamation ploughing and pulling a lime spreader on steep ground.
It had been a demonstration machine. It was reconditioned at the DB works, (looked new), and I paid £1,440 for it. I also used the 4 cyl. 30TD.
Sadly no pics. of them.
The 50 was a half decent machine and served me well but the 30 was only fitted with a 10 inch single plate clutch which proved not to be up to blade work even with the small engine.
A few pictures below of some other applications of the 50 TD.

Thanks Fred  I always thought what an odd idea the load over system is, it would soon give you neck ache.

Thanks Pete,

Just for the record the 30TD was not as stated in the video equipped with the DB 900 engine which would have been 40 HP. It was based on the earlier
DB 30 D Which was only 34 HP.
The 40 TD was equipped with the DB 950 engine as stated, that developed 42.5 HP.
It may have been even easier to start if the guy knew there was an advance and retard cold start unit fitted to the injector pump. It was operated by a screw with a T bar under the pump.
The six cylinder 50 TD was a 50 HP. machine.

Fred.
