Perkins V8.510 in a Fordson Major

Post #1 by Aussie Owen » Mon Sep 13, 2021 11:03 pm

I have an old perkins v8.510 that is currently in a Massey 201 cane harvester, for years I've planned on pulling it out and building a pulling tractor with it. I'm finally getting serious about doing that so have been looking around the net at what other people have done. I can find alot of examples of massey 35's and Fordson Majors with Perkins v8's fitted, so I'm wondering if anyone here has done it or seen it done. The diesel majors had around 44hp engines so obviously it's not going to handle the 170hp Perkins.
Anyone got ideas of what ass end people are using when they put the perkins v8s in these little tractors?

I would guess the little MF might be problem but there have been many conversions of the Major using the original drive line. I have always been led to believe that the Major was massively over engineered. I am no expert but I think the dual clutch needs to be avoided and the standard 11" clutch uprated to 13". I guess the transmission would need checking through. Have a like on some of the YouTube posts and perhaps ask them some questions?

Thanks mate, have been looking at the videos on youtube, didn't actually consider commenting with a question.

I'm a bit torn between the E1A and the super major.
Is there any reason to go one over the other? (For a pulling tractor)

Have an ask on you tube and/or the Fordson Pages forum (the latter very knowledgeable but might be a little p!Ssed at mods on an original machine :D
The supers were set up with slightly different gearing, something to do with moving the PTO speed into a different engine rev range.

Perhaps it was just the New Power range, with grey wings, that had the mods to gearing. They tend to be quite scarce and fetch more money.

I think the reason for using the Major back end is the arrangement of the driveline. From memory, the 35 is clutch, gearbox, diff, halfshaft, wheel, whereas the major has a final reduction after the diff before the halfshafts so reducing the load on the diff. A Massey 65 has the final reduction in the hub reducing the load on the halfshaft as well.
Looking at the Major side on, you can see the brake drums ahead of the axle - the diff is between the brake drums, not where you would traditionally find it ie between the back wheels.

Exactly right HB. Reduction gears in the Major behind the diff. The shafts out of the diff carry gears for the reduction and brakes on the end of the bull shafts.
Modern tractors shorten that area by reduction in compact epicyclic gears in axle trumpets or hubs. In design, the 65 was more modern than the Major.

Thanks for the info, I went and had a look at a fordson that is for sale locally yesterday. Turns out it is a power major, a bit of rust in the usual spots but looked pretty good.

Different spec wheels to what we would seen as the norm in the UK. It looks in tidy order compared to some here as well. You can check age and authenticity by casting date codes. Mind you with what you have planned not really an issue! :D

Yes I've noticed that about the wheels, almost every power or super major for sale in Aus has these rims
