Post #1 by D4D2 » Sat Apr 21, 2018 10:49 am

Hi There
What engine oil should I use on a Caterpillar 22 1935 tractor.
It is a TVO engine
Also where can you get TVO from?

Thank you

Rye oil from Rye, East Sussex do TVO in bulk or drums.

Rye Oil will also recommend and supply a suitable engine oil for your 22.

The recommended oil was probably a straight non detergent SAE30, SAE 40 or even 50 according to climate.

There's a lot of differing opinion as to whether modern multi-grade and detergent oils do any harm. Some say that if you use a detergent oil, (which is designed to carry the carbon deposits in suspension), into an old dirty engine it will free off all the carbon and crud deposits and carry them to the bearings, particularly in an old engine with poor or non-existent filtration.

I have had no trouble using multi-grade detergent oils in clean rebuilt TVO engines. My 1941 Fordson does OK on it.
They clearly couldn't specify multi-grade oils in the 30s and 40s because they didn't exist. The modern multi-grade oils are probably better than anything they had then anyway.
I mix my own TVO using petrol, kerosene and hydraulic oil it runs my tractor and a friends Ferguson 20 no problem.
