International 444 bull pinion seals

Post #1 by pukekawa » Wed Oct 19, 2016 1:16 am

so I couldnt find any decent pics or info on the procedure to replace these seals
oil was leaking all through the brakes actually making the linings fall to bits.
Prob been leaking for years as I got the tractor with the farm .
So here are the pics of the top diff cover removed, once I pull the axles ill take some more pics , hope this helps other people

The workshop manual has terrible pictures

I used a block and tackle off the roll bar to lift the diff cover off, looking at this I say to get the gearbox cover off you would have to remove this diff cover first so might remove the bolt out that is trapped under the diff cover while its off.
You can the see the bolt in the second picture just to the top left of the crown wheel - I have marked a red circle around it.

so heres pics of the axles removed , all the bolts for the roll bar were rusted solid!was a bit of a mission especially as I have a very limited set of A/F sockets but got it all removed

you can see the bull pinion carrier that i have circled with red, this is were im guessing should be a rope seal/mechanical packing , this is completely gone

Well Scott it looks like you have got to the heart of the problem  just replacement seals and plenty of copper grease on the fasteners when you reassemble it.

well its all in bits now so the easy bits done I always reckon no stubborn rusted bolts remove no gears to pull
Just slip it all back together and check pre load and on the bearings dont loose count of the shims you pulled and which side they came from
If you change bearings you will have to set the diff center up again as well, Im pretty sure IH have special clamps for doing this but sure with bearing blue and some solder you could get it pretty close again
I have just done in the last 6 months a 886 back end its a big job or at least I found it a big job but steady steady and it was done
