David Brown Carraro Axle

Any thoughts on packing hubs on the Carraro axle with Lith-Moly grease instead of using oil, i always seem to have a weep of oil out of the hubs

David I cannot answer that one but what I can suggest is that you check the following;
1) Make sure the axle breather is clear and not clogged up with muck.
2) Check the axle where the hub seals run is not worn, if it is you will need a sleeve fitting.
3) If sleeves are already fitted fit new ones with silicone sealant underneath as the oil can sometimes pass the seal via the sleeve.
4) Check the viscosity of the axle oil is correct and that it is not overfilled.

you'd be better off using 85w-140 semi-fluid grease

which part of the hub is leaking because with out knowing you could be really just stabbing in the dark and I have mo experience on Carraro front ends but have worked on other brands and they are similar
Do you know the oil is coming from the hub and not the diff center as it will leak out the hub end as well
I would change the seal sleeves and what ever else to fix it as the planetary will have needle bearings and the grease might not lube the properly

Perhaps do like Paul suggests, fit some new seals when you have the time. The hub parts will be expensive and possibly difficult to source on an old model. I have used grease in some boxes like the crappy one on our Macconnell Flail and dung spreader but I think you might have trouble in a hub.
