I understand that the rubber tracked machines are not so good for earthmoving due to belt (rubber track) slippage and consequent wear. I still feel that if you don't need to go on or cross the public road, steel tracks take a bit of beating.

The STX has posi-drive lugs in the tracks so there's no slippage, unlike the Deere or Cat which relies entirely on the friction between the drive wheel & track. Also when you turn it on the headlands of the fields it won't spew the soil up.

I think the key thing to remember when it comes to construction work is that these machines were never designed to replace a 450hp motor scraper, something that gets forgotten easily when they put them in to conditions where the wheeled machine just sinks in deep, or expects them to work in rocky conditions which just tears the tracks up

Richard, interestingly enough, were working back at Bradford with seven D8s & boxes
and three D6s there are also two quads each with a pair of boxe,s,one is a Bell tractor
and the other a Case IH,there on the longer haul ,the Bell tractor got a rock wedged
in his tracks and took some time to get it out :dizzy: another metre down theres a 12"layer
of rock the D8s have been scraping it out ok,lets see what the rubber tracks make of it,
there should be some film of them coming back this weekend  meanwhile here,s that
old 9380 pulling up some os rape stubble

I reckon they'll shred those rubber tracks in a short space of time.
How big are the STX & the boxes and how do they compare in overall cycle time to the rest?......and what do the operators think of them?

Richard,i dont know the tractor size, they claim the scoops are 18yrds,but my
lot recon 14yrds,the men on the blades levelling out say theres a lot more
dirt from a 463 than a pair of scoops, even though there one gear faster than
the D8s there not moving the muck, and there dodging the ruts made from the
D8s afraid of getting stuck i spose  when the going gets tough and there
back on that layer of rock and the rain forecast for next week i think they will
be parked up. :)my lot recon there a poor excuse for a scraper, when the D8s
are turning sharp on the tip the box tends to roll backwards and if a quad is
right up there arse it has to dive out the way sharpish or get run over by a
big back wheel :o

Richard, the rubber tracks pulling the scrapers are a Case 9380 and a Bell 4206D
they say the scoops are 18 yrds but look like 8 ,i,ll put some pictures up under scrapers.

Hi Roly, Great photos! Was just discussing these tractors earlier as known about them for many years and one can be clearly seen from the road now. Do you have any more photos of the Fiats to share? Many thanks Howard
