If you can get it running for now wait till the warm weather, take out the tap and drain. Then pressure wash the inside. Leave the off the cap and the tap for a decent period to allow any water to drain out. Some might say this is mad?

Not at all, in fact if the tank is off when it's done you can always take it indoors to dry it out.
2 reasons for counting the bolts, if there's one or two missing they could be stuck in some more stubborn residue and signal more cleaning required or, more likely in my case, the missing bolt will be someting like a 'rare lh 5/8 countersunk whitworth' which I will spend forever looking for not realising where it went!
Yes the red car in the first pic. I'll get back in my box...

Re: Leyland 272 Fuel starvation problem
Hi guys,
So set about cleaning the tank over the weekend. I examined the tank with a torch and it didn't seem too bad, so decided to just swill it out a couple of times with diesel. This was working well, until disaster! A hole appeared in the bottom of the tank! Obviously it had rusted on the inside. I have it sent away to be welded and will hopefully have it back before the end of the week.

sorry bout the delay in getting back! got the tank back last weekend, and happy to report that that its working fine now!! time to move on to the next few problems, such as replacing the bushings in the steering, tightening the brakes, rewiring the ignition switch as the battery is not charging......etc, etc, etc!

You'll get there. Just beware of running it with ign wires missing. If as you say it doesn't charge, it could be a stuffed alternator or down to disconnected wires. Unfortunately you can damage a good alternator by running it disconnected.
