Identify a fordson major

Hi can anyone date my fordson major from the gearbox flange number or casting number
The only number on the flange is 3

The number on the gearbox casing is in the pic any help would be great thanks Vince

Every casting will have a casting code - the engine one is behind the dynamo. They will be 'letter - number - number - letter'. Collect several, engine gearbox, axle bell housing, hyd. top etc., then use the following link to see how many correspond within a few days of each other and you'll have a fair idea if your machine is mostly original or a jigsaw of parts!

Use this link to date the engine. Number should be on the rh side of the block near the front. If that panel is blank, then look on the lh side bell housing flange. Pig to read but it will be there somewhere and should match the number on the firewall plate. If the number starts with an S, it's a replacement engine. The number is likely to appear to be an italic typeface.

What Rob has said and if you go round several castings you may find out if the tractor is original. One would expect the codes to be fairly close. The easiest one to find is close to the clutch lever and gearbox filler.

Not forgetting some more pics. There's a lot of visible detail variations, and we all like pics!

Thanks for the info I'll look in the places mentioned I'm stripping it down so I can get a better look I will take some photos I know the engine was changed around 10 years ago the chap fitted a ford industrial engine from a side loader then passed away and it's sat outside since I was thinking of trying to get a v5 for it to pull my living van to shows
