BIG DIESEL ENGINES

Post #1 by martyn williams » Sat Nov 17, 2007 5:17 pm

This is a v16 ruston as fitted to Class 56 locomotives.I spent many years rebuilding these power units. The engine/alternator unit weighs in at 36 ton.The rectangular boxes at the end of the engine are intercoolers it is fitted with two turbo chargers.Horse power is 3250.We used a 75 ton crane to remove the engines which are a snug fit into the bodyshell. When rebuilt they were run in on a load bank for a day, testing them to maximum output. There are 16 seperate cylinder heads with six nuts per head torqued down to 650ftlb.The electrical output would power up a small town. The free end of the engine has its oil and coolant pumps. The tube on the bedplate is the heat exchanger.Top rpm is around 900 and is protected with an overspeed trip at 1093rpm.

Hi Martyn,

This makes the 14ltr Cummins NTCE engines that I used to re-build look rather small to say the least :o
Well at least I can say Ive taken a half CC Davis model aircraft engine to bits and re-built that :!:
You could probably fit about 20 of em into one of those cylinders
Nice one mate.

This is what they sound like when fitted to the locomotive pulling 2000 tons of coal.
There was an even bigger engine of the same make at Potishead powerstation Bristol. It was four times the size of the one above.

Hi Martyn,

Cool pics mate 8-)
Thought Id post a couple of engine pics, the first one is of a sectioned Commer TS3 rocking beam two stroke diesel engine. This engine is at the Coventry transport museam.
It works in a similar manor to the Napier Deltic and Junkers Jumo engines, the main difference is that the TS3 only has one crankshaft, the pistons move towards each other via con-rods fitted to a rocking beam, hence the name.
I can as a young lad recall hearing these engines roar up the local A41, apparently my friend who used to drive such a truck said "they wouldnt pull you out of bed on a wet sunday morning"
Ive been told it used to be the apprentices job to clean out the routes lobe blower on these machines, horrible job
My they did use to sound great though, in these days of sound polution freaks one can sadly no longer hear such music.
