Norscot 992G

Post #1 by Dah » Thu Mar 12, 2015 3:45 pm

Hi,

Just got a Norscot 992G and want to replace the plastic hand rails with metal ones.

What thinkness wire is a good match for 1:50 scale - somewhere around 1mm?

I was also thinking about using stainless wire instead of brass thinking that it may be a little stronger, however, is it possible to solder stainless with a gas soldering iron (done it before with brass but never tried stainless with normal solder)?

Thank you
Dave

Also what do you tend to use for 1:50 hydraulic hoses?!

Hi Dah,

For handrails on 1:50 models I use 1/32 (0.81mm) brass rod. Its thin enough to bend but once soldered is pretty strong.

For hydraulic hoses I buy a pair of 99p MP3 player headphones and cut them up.

I'm trying to find some photos for you. This is a WA800 project i have on the go. The replaced handrails on the access steps are brass and the hyd lines are headphone wire.

Here you can see the difference between the brass for the mirror arms and the plastic handrails.

Thanks Martin - looks great!

Realised after I posted the question that I wouldn't be able to solder stainless so I'm back on the brass!

Ive looked on ebay and can see lots of 1mm brass wire - I guess its the same as 1mm rod but just needs straightening?

Great top with the headphones btw!!!

Hi Martin,

I will definately post some pictures - uless it goes horribly wrong!

Thinking about is, I'm guessing typical handrails are around 40mm in real life so guess 0.8mm is bang on scale for 1:50?

Sorry - one more question (getting a bit excited / carried away!). How do you go about matching the paint for your WA800? Looks perfect patch.

Thanks,
David

I've not really matched it yet, I've put all the bits on but still yet to paint it.

I'm colour blind so what I think looks right will probably be a million miles away!

Someone somewhere will have the paint code.
