hi mechman here my recently aquired dumper is very difficult to turn over the compression stroke it has a petters PH2 engine. I was thinking that a decoke would maybe lower the compression a tad or take up body building any ideas anyone :(

Hi Norman; welcome to CMN  I would have thought that your dumper engine should be fitted with a de-compressor lever to aid turning the engine over when starting it, I have been told that there is quite a technique involved in starting machines like this because a kick back can break a limb :dizzy:
The de-compressor lever would normally be situated somewhere on the cylinder head or on the valve train side of the engine.

thanks jeremy it has decompress lever but as you say its a limb breaker several bodies have tried it. I dont want it to become a burden on the N.H.S maybe an electric start conversion norm

May be obvious but are you just using one decompression lever?

Someone like Fred will know but might make a difference if the fuel pump timing is slightly out?

thanks pete

decompression levers are joined together so cannot have one without the other. Got dumper given to me and have been told it did run but very difficult to start which has proved correct. Would not like to upset the last guy who started it :(

Wondering if you could separate the levers and start on one cylinder?

Pete you would still be acting against the compression of one cylinder to start the engine and Norman says it hard to try and start with the use of both de-compression levers. I am sure that there is a technique used to start engines like this but I don't know what the correct method is? I hope somebody on here can state the correct method to fire these engines up.

Tow it! :D

Just a thought for the OP are you opening the fuel rack for start position.

Just had a quick look and came across this; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2EuRAtPCN8

Hmm  he certainly makes it look easy enough so I wonder if perhaps you have additional woes with your dumper?

tried cold start lever etc cant tow it as yet because of wrecked track rod will try when track rod situ remedied.
How big was the guy on youtube (just a thought)
