It's developed a new problem, as all things do! When driving backwards the steering is now really light and makes me wonder why power steering was ever invented, when driving forwards however it is impossible to turn the steering wheel it locks up that much. The bolts holding the steering box are all tight, and it does make a graunching noice a bit when steering. Any ideas much appreciated

We had trouble with old Nimbus years ago. Water can run down the column over time with a worn top seal and the innards of the box become damaged. I can't remember if it was OK in reverse but it might be that once moved slighly left or right in reverse the steering naturally wants to travel in that direction due to caster angle.
It is possible that the bearings are damaged and this in turn would lead to damage on the worm.

I've had the steering box apart and back together and it all seemed fine. I'm thinking it's something to do with the big steel plate at the back where the 3 arms meet up, one each for both the wheels and a third that goes to the steering box.that's the only thing I can think of, will look closer at it today.
