1985 benford TT3000

Post #1 by weirdfish » Tue Aug 15, 2023 2:37 pm

Hi,
Newbie here, just purchased a benford 3 ton dumper, it was too cheap to turn down.
A few problems were known about, a few weren’t.
Needs a good service and the stop lever doesn’t work, not got around to that yet.
After cleaning it I found the oil feed pipe to the top of the engine had a hole in it, the orbital steering unit leaked badly.
Pipe being repaired, just dropped the orbital unit off to hopefully to be re sealed.
New ignition switch en route, someone had fitted a random switch that did not switch off, starter motor constantly engaged.
Hopefully in a few days it’ll be up and running.
On the question of the stop lever, it’s been disconnected from the cable/lever that operates it so I assume someone has had trouble with it and couldn’t be bothered to repair it.
When you operate the lever on the side of the engine it doesn’t seem to have much resistance, what is it connected to inside? Can I just remove it without damage and have a look inside.
It’s a 3 cylinder lister petter engine.
Thank in advance, I’m sure there’ll be other questions.

Sounds like a nice machine and will be handy to have once running properly. Sounds like you have eveything under control except the stop lever. I have never been inside here so cannot advise. While waiting for the answer do your service fully from oil, fuel filters and new engine oil. As for the electrics fitting the proper switch will be good but you can get away with a press button switch from a marine supplier as they are a better grade of switch and can come with a ruber boot to keep the water out.
Hopefully a decent reply for the stop lever comes soon for you. Keep us informed.
Cheers Cobba

Hi and welcome  I'm sure somebody can point you in the right direction with the engine stop issue.

Steering valve refitted along with oil feed pipe, new ignition switch as well, went to start and battery was flat, now on charge.
Anyone any ideas regarding the stop mechanism?

Was it just a pull or an electric solenoid stop?

I think it was just a pull cable type of thing

If you try to follow where a stop cable would connect then try moving the arm in the direction of the pull. Maybe a clear pic will help as well

I can see the part the cable used to connect to but when you operate it nothing happens, I’m just wondering whether something inside has been disconnected.
Can’t seem to find anything on line to show what’s inside.

Is there a pinch bolt or a grub screw on the lever?

I’ll take a pic to show what it looks like
