Re: Nimbus non starter.....
Hi tillywolves I noticed in your first post you mentioned that you were going to use instant gasket on your pump . I tried instant gasket (3 bond ) at the bottom of the fuel filter bowl . Despite leaving it for 3 days to fully cure and it really was properly cured it softened up very quickly when in contact with the diesel and went into a sort of sludgy mess . Had to clean it all off and start again . This leaves me to think that instant gasket is not compatible with diesel . Has this been your experience or does anyone else know any different ? I use instant gasket a fair bit on the old Brit bikes because they have usually been butchered over the years and have never had a problem using it with engine oil . Diesel different matter . Cheers Chris

Shouldn't be an issue, as the joint at the bottom of the pump is only internally lubricated with oil from the crankcase.

I have found that some silicon sealants do not go well with fuels and oils but at worse they just leak. To make a paper gasket is so simple that it is not worth using the sealants. What does make a difference on some engines is the thickness of the gasket paper.

Re: Nimbus non starter.....
Finally had some time to work on the dumper yesterday. New piston rings arrived, and Ive ordered a new small end bush, big end bearings, a bush set for the rockers and a shim kit to set up the bump clearance. There was a lot of play/wear in the old bearings.

Re: Nimbus non starter.....
Got a replacement second hand head off Ebay, as the intake pins had been broken on my existing. Stripped down the valves to find the exhaust coked up. Cleaned out, lapped and refitted...

So, fitted all the parts together. OIl change and new filter. Oil was thick, black and goopy, so well past its best. New piston rings have been fitted, so I hones out the barrel. Rockers got a new set of bushes, but were well worn out at the ends, so I will need to replace those.
Still having problems easily starting the engine though. Starts after spray of easy start, and idles nicely, but such a faff to get going. I have yet to measure the bump clearance, or look at timing, but as it was getting to the end of the day, I wanted the engine together.
