Yes, I watched a recent Abom79 video on youtube about brazing a cast iron lathe part... very interesting.

Hi All,
Sorry for no updates, but here you go the latest status of my gearbox.
1. I have now repaired the cracked casing by welding.
2. Scoured new parts, I.e new indent spring and indent balls, new seals for output shaft.
3. Reassembled the box, with additional fabricated parts around gear stick.
4. Repainted the box in a matching yellow.
5. Preparing for the final assembly of the frame and clutch before installing back into the dumper, hopefully in the coming weeks. :D

Some transformation! How did you weld the case?

I used special cast iron arc welding rods, no pre-heating needed just weld an inch at a time, using the chipping hammer I then peened the weld as it cooled. Means it takes a long time to complete the full weld. To finish I used also some liquid metal just to give it a smooth finish. I am very pleased with the results :D

I had some cast iron parts welded and built up with those cast iron rods. The guy who did the job did preheat a little bit and then after the job allowed it to cool naturally. Finished job worked a treat so I expect you to have the same result, well done.

Nice result, I hate welding cast iron castings, its the ting noises as it cools sets my teeth on edge. Ive done same with using stainless tig rods as filler, but the downside is the weld bead is super hard to dress up afterwards.

Yeah I fully agree, it’s quite a strange sound but the results have been better than expected. :D

I also did an experiment using my MIG welder and it was on gas if that makes any difference. It was to repair a cast iron rocker arm from a vintage stationary engine. I had a good one but this broken one needed to be played with. I welded it up, peened it out and it is as strong as if there is no repair.
Cheers Cobba
