Lister hard to start

Evening All

Got a little time to work on Barford Bantam with Lister Sr1 engine. Good news is it runs nicely once started. However, I had to tow it to get it going!

Day spent fitting new fuel, oil and air filter. New diesel into newly lined the fuel tank. Fuel lines bled to injector. Injector creak audible.

Hand crank produced a little white smoke at exhaust and a little from near injector. But not the grey smoke seen on youtube

Tow with Land Rover and off it goes.

How do I get it to start with just a hand crank? More porridge? Compression is good. Tried oil down air inlet but compression seems great.

Is the smoke from near injector a problem? Does not smoke when running!

The old parts catalogue shows an injector joint. I could not see a washer underneath injector when cleaning and had it out. I was expecting a copper crush washer.

It wants to start more with foot on the gas paddle.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

David

It does sound as though the injector is not sealed.

I will purchaser joint washer and install. Compression seems very high but leaking smoke must be a bad sign.

Spent considerable time investigating smoke from near the injector. I think it is not from the injector but from a poor exhaust seal. Re-attached the exhaust and problem solved.

However, the old thing is still not starting easily. I got it going with a tow and ran it for an hour. Works perfectly but 1 hour later and it is still hard to start. Always needs cold start to get going even when very warm.

I am now going to let it completely cool and see if it is easier to cold start after being run.

Make sure it's not sucking air in from any of the diesel pipes or unions . One leak could cause a problem .

OK. will recheck unions in unit itself and at filter etc. Thanks for the insight.

Could the timing be slightly out due to wear or has it been apart? Could do with our esteemed Fred for some expert advice.

Update. All connections checked and looking good. I will check that the oil level does not increase in the coming days.

Over the last two days it has started by hand after two attempts. I think this is very acceptable. I think running it for a whole hour has really improved performance.

Hi' David,

I am renovating a similar machine to yours and wondered if I could ask you to send me a photo of the pedal assembly under the vehicle floor. I think the clutch and brake assembly has been welded together on mine as both pedals go down together?
Plus I cant see a method of removing the whole assembly from the vehicle even after removing the large nut on the inboard side of the main frame...............

Thank you in advance !

Colin.
