I'm with Cobba on this; if you've got good access around the plate going in with your phone camera with the flash on permanent and trying lots of different angled views may just do the trick...it's a homebrew, rough and ready version of doing this: https://www.hpl.hp.com/research/ptm/MakingPtmNew.htm You could of course do exactly what HP did but that might be going a bit far ;) The use of the flash and lots of angled views can sometimes help bring out subtle details from the shadow of surface texture changes.

Photo with a Half decent digital camera ( remember them ! ) may show it up as well .
They can pick up things that show on the resultant image that the eye cannot see.
Seen this work on old military stuff with faded markings.

Thanks again for the advice.

I have tried to read the ID plate with the methods suggested.

I would say the best guess is

89-5SH1A21

The H could be an r but not a t.

But given the earlier comments here, I was fairly sure it is a Barford Bantam or SD011 and purchased an old manual off eBay.

Interesting data within.

Hi David.

I have been doing a bit more digging and have found a bit more information that certainly points to this engine being a Lister SR1. This engine was in production from 1967 to 1976. Does this tie in with the age of your dumper assuming it is the original engine? The rated horsepower of this engine was 7.75 @ 2500 rpm.

The engine number was broken down as follows:-

89 - I am struggling with this, could it be 69 which would possibly tie in with the years of production?
5 - Is the fifth engine of that type built in that particular year.
SH?1 - I cannot find a Lister engine with that designation, so think it is more likely to be an SR1
A - Anticlockwise rotation which I believe is at the flywheel
21 - Is the build number, the difference from the standard build

I hope this helps a bit more.
